A Masterclass In Terrible Feedback Practices
Content
It needs no emphasis just how crucial feedback is in every field but that importance is doubled (or maybe, tripled) in free and open source software communities. A community of contributors and users may realize that and yet still fail to provide and receive feedback the right way by either doing it in the wrong place or the wrong time (and heebie-jeebies to security concerns!), doing too little or too much of that (and stepping onto contributor's toes!) and most importantly, by taking it personally (and missing the entire point!).
As a part of the FOSDEM 2025's edition of Community Devroom - I want to deliver a satirical talk on what terrible feedback practices look like with some authentic and fictional examples and how it both hurts a community of contributors or users and ruins a free and open source software project. Conversely, this is an attempt to help people understand how they should provide and receive feedback, when feedback is useful and when it's not and workflows with which a community can establish an effective feedback loop.
While the presentation is expected to have a universal appeal to folks involved in free and open source software communities either as users or contributors - the audience fraternity that would be able to derive the most value from this talk would be community managers looking to form a continuous feedback flow, community leaders looking to increase interaction among contributors and users, product teams wanting to receive feedback effectively and enthusiastic users wanting to provide feedback effectively.
Please note that the satirical tone of the presentation is intentional to emphasize the abnormality of the terrible feedback practices that we have come to accept as normal. There will be visual cues on the slide decks to remark what sections are ironical and what sections are intended to ensure that the message is conveyed as accurately as possible.
